FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF

In these photos, I am captured in acting in the role of “Lady in Purple” for Ntozake Shange's choreopoem, "For Colored Girls Who Committed Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf". In this iteration, directed by Elizabeth Carter and produced by the African American Shakespeare company, I perform the poems, "Sechetita'', "Latent Rapist", and "Love Like Sisters". "For Colored Girls” is the epitome of the spoken word as a form of self-definition, and stands out amongst both works written by Black male and white playwrights that deny the complex experiences of Black Women. Here, Black women self-define, otherwise. They feel and are valid knowledge holders; they are keepers of sacred wisdom.

SPECTRUM QUEER MEDIA’S: FOR COLORED GIRLS

The following videos entitled, “No More Apologies” and “Latent Rapist” documents my performance during Spectrum Queer Media’s production of Ntozake Shange’s "For Colored Girls Who Committed Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf", in which I acted as “Lady in Blue”. “No More Apologies” depicts Lady in Blue’s exhaustion of dealing with a lover who constantly makes excuses for the lack of quality love they give. “Latent Rapist” is a monologue that explores the phenomena of Black women being raped by men they considered to be a friend, and the aftermath of such violent encounters.
